Winter Workshops on Energy Law on February 28 – March 1, 2016

“Our Brave New Energy World” opens with Deputy Administrator Howard Gruenspecht of the U.S. Energy Information Administration at the DOE providing an analysis of the future of U.S. Energy, if the Clean Power Plan (CPP) is implemented as drafted. The changing status of the CPP will be analyzed by Allison Wood at Hunton & Williams, Washington, DC; Jerry Eyster at GE Energy Financial Services in Stamford, CT; and Tom Lorenzen at Crowell & Moring in Washington.

An update on renewables will be provided by Lauren Thirer of GE Renewables, Schenectady, NY, with a discussion by Larry Eisenstat, Crowell & Moring, on the transmission additions needed to accommodate power generated by renewables. Michael Zenker, Managing Director of NextEra Energy in West Palm Beach, FL, will discuss whether renewables will be able to meet EPA’s expectation.

The future of gas supply and gas markets will be discussed by Andrew Bradford, CEO of BTU Analytics, Denver, and Michael Krancer of Blank Rome in Philadelphia will analyze whether the CPP really favors natural gas.

Seth Schwartz, President of Energy Ventures Analysis in Arlington, VA, will present a discussion on the supply/demand for coal. Greg Robertson, Hunton & Williams, Richmond, VA, will discuss the upcoming UMW contract negotiations and miner benefits.

The program concludes with David Ries, Clark Hill in Pittsburgh, providing a one-hour ethics session that will explore current developments in ethics and professional responsibility from recent rules amendments, ethics opinions, and court cases, including competence in technology and e-discovery, safeguarding client data and funds, missed deadlines, and more.

The program will be at the Lago Mar Resort and Club in Fort Lauderdale, a beachfront resort located just 15 minutes from the airport. Special rates for 1-bedroom suites are available for EMLF registrants. There is a welcome reception on Sunday night from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m., another reception on Monday night from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m., plus a mid-morning brunch for all registrants and their registered guests on Tuesday morning.
