Back to Law School . . . With a Few Extra $$$
Supporting law student education through scholarships is one of the Foundation’s highest goals.   Since the inception of the law student scholarship program, the Foundation has awarded $542,000 in scholarships.

This year the EMLF awarded $60,000 in scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year to the following students:

  • David W. Cias, Southern Methodist University, Dedman School of Law
  • Margaret Coulter, American University, Washington College of Law
  • Aaron K. Friess, Washburn University School of Law
  • Jonathan B. Hollan, University of Louisville, Brandeis School of Law
  • Michael J. Howard, University of Colorado Law School
  • George McIntyre, West Virginia University College of Law
  • Sunu M. Pillai, University of Pittsburgh School of Law
  • Seth C. Rasmussen, Southern Methodist University, Dedman School of Law
  • Peter Thompson, Southern Methodist University, Dedman School of Law
  • Ryan M. Watson, West Virginia University College of Law

The majority (74%) of the total scholarship awards are funded by annual operating income from program registrations and membership dues.  The scholarship program began in 1984, awarding $2000 annually.  For the past two years, the scholarships awards have totaled $50,000, and this year the EMLF was able to award $60,000, due in part to an $85,000 contribution provided through the Cabot Settlement Proceeds, established for WVU law students.  Scholarships include the $1000 Paul N. Bowles Scholarship, the $1000 James H. Davis Scholarship, the $2000 Sean Cassidy Scholarship, and the $2000 Mary Sue Schulberg Scholarship.

Featured EMLF Member Law Schools

This month’s featured law school is Appalachian School of Law, located in Grundy, VA.  For the past six years, students on ASL’s Natural Resources Law Journal have performed the cite and source check for the Foundation’s annual Energy & Mineral Law Institute.  With its strong curriculum and emphasis on natural resources law, ASL is presenting The Governor’s First Biennial Natural Resources and Energy Law Symposium on September 23, 2013 at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, VA.

EMLF Law School Programs – Careers in Energy Law
Each year EMLF volunteers spend some time at member law schools, encouraging students to consider a career in energy law by giving brief presentations on their daily work and showing students the wide variety of practice areas that energy lawyers enjoy.  Students also learn about the EMLF and student memberships, the availability of scholarships, and discounted and free registration at EMLF educational programs.  If you would like to volunteer to speak at one of these programs, just contact sharon@emlf.org. No written materials required!
