Mine Safety & Health Law Special Institute

There's still time to take advantage of the early bird rates for the Special Institute on Mine Safety and Health Law. Early bird rates are good through September 1.

The Energy & Mineral Law Foundation and Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation are co-sponsoring the institute to be held on September 24 at the Encore/Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, prior to the opening of the National Mining Association’s MINExpo International 2016, September 26-28, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Chaired by Dan Wolff at Crowell & Moring, topics include criminal enforcement of mine safety violations, with speakers from the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Labor’s Office of the Solicitor; Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) investigations and documents requests; the Mine Act’s whistleblower provisions; MSHA’s regulatory agenda; Judicial Deference; effects of bankruptcy on Mine Act enforcement; and building a culture of workplace safety.

There will also be a case update on recent cases before the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission (FMSHRC), and a Q&A session with Commissioner William I. Althen and Robert J. Lesnick, Chief Judge, FMSHRC.

Dave Freudenthal, former Governor of Wyoming, will be the luncheon speaker, addressing topics of interest to the western mining industry, including recent federal actions related to the sage grouse, “net gain” mitigation policy, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
