Winter Workshops on Energy Law

Plan to join us in Fort Lauderdale on February 28-March 1, 2016 at the Lago Mar Beach Resort to hear exceptional faculty from a variety of disciplines.  The goal of the Winter Workshops is to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of selected legal issues, by presenting them within the context of business considerations and public policy concerns affecting the energy industry.  Go to www.emlf.org for complete program information, hotel reservations, and program registration.

37th Annual Institute

The EMLF’s 37th Annual Institute will be June 12 - 14 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Suites, in the Historic District of Charleston, SC.

Help us plan a great program!  We’re now soliciting topic proposals for the Annual Institute through February 15, and invite you to submit topics and speaker suggestions on a wide variety of topics, including but not limited to: oil and gas, midstream, coal, electric power generation and distribution, renewable energy, emissions trading programs, environmental law and regulation, bankruptcy, energy efficiency, energy policy, contracts, leases and other transactions; ethics, land, title and real property; human resources, labor and employment, occupational safety and mine safety and health, litigation, rail transportation, natural gas transmission, pipelines, LNG, power purchase contracts -- whatever issues you would like to see addressed.

Part of speaking at the Annual Institute involves a commitment to write a scholarly chapter of law review quality, for inclusion in volume 37 of the Energy & Mineral Law Institute.  Speakers must also provide written materials at the Institute for distribution to all attendees in order to meet requirements for Continuing Legal Education credits.  The chapter is due at the time of the Annual Institute.  Topic proposals should provide an adequate description of the legal issues to be covered so that the topic can be fully evaluated.

Topic proposals should be sent via email to Sharon Daniels.

EMLF Law Student Scholarship Program

As part of its mission to foster the study of energy and mineral law, the EMLF -- for the past 32 years -- has awarded scholarships to students attending law schools, which are members of the EMLF.

Scholarships will be given again this year to law students studying energy, environmental, natural resource, and mineral law.

The awards are funded through membership dues and earnings from special memorial scholarships.  Special scholarships this year are the Sean Cassidy $2000 scholarship; the Mary Sue Schulberg Memorial Scholarship for $2000; and the James H. Davis Memorial Scholarship for $1000.

Law schools may join the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation at any time for a $100 annual membership fee, creating student scholarship eligibility.

This past year, scholarships went to 11 law students (from nine different law schools). Thirty-eight students from member law schools competed for the awards.

Applications are now being accepted for scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic year. EMLF scholarships generally range from $1000 - $10,000 and must be used at a law school, which is a member of the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation.  Application forms and complete information for submitting an application can be found on the EMLF website.

The deadline for applications is April 15.
