To foster the next generation of energy and mineral lawyers, the EMLF offers student memberships, awards law student scholarships, provides programs on "Careers in Energy Law" at member law schools, and offers registration fee waivers to attend EMF educational programs. Since the inception of the law student scholarship program, $542,000 in scholarship money has been awarded, with $60,000 awarded in the current academic year.
Law Student Programs
The Energy & Mineral Foundation (EMLF) is proud to support future energy lawyers by offering law school programs that encourage students to pursue a career in the mineral and energy field. Through its programs at member law schools, EMLF increases student awareness of the opportunities to work within the energy industry, educates students on issues facing the industry, and provides students with the opportunity to earn scholarship money to help fulfill educational goals.
EMLF Law Student Scholarship Program
For the 2017-2018 academic year, the EMLF awarded $33,000 in student scholarships to qualifying students attending EMLF member law schools. The 2017-18 scholarship recipients were announced in May, 2107 at EMLF’s Annual Institute in Williamsburg, Virginia.
EMLF’s Careers in Energy Law
One-hour programs at various member law schools are hosted by EMLF members representing a wide array of practice areas within the energy industry. The program is designed to introduce law students to the variety of career opportunities that exist within the industry and provide a forum in which students may interact with practicing lawyers in their field of interest.
EMLF Student Membership
Students can join EMLF for a discounted rate of $20.00 a year. Membership allows students substantial discounts on registration fees; free access to EMLF white papers on the EMLF website; subscription to the EMLF online newsletter; free Membership Directory and free listing with your contact information on the Foundation’s website.
EMLF Law Student Fee Waivers Policy
EMLF encourages student members to attend EMLF-sponsored Continuing Legal Education programs by waiving the registration fee for a limited number of students per CLE program. If you would like a registration fee waiver to attend a specific EMLF program, contact Sharon Daniels, Executive Director, via email at email@example.com and request a fee waiver. The number of fee waivers varies with space availability at programs.
EMLF Support for Member Law School Projects
From time to time, the EMLF supports programs and projects at member law schools which foster the understanding of energy and mineral law issues. In 2012, the EMLF helped sponsor the West Virginia University College of Law Energy & Sustainability Moot Court Competition, with topics focused on the most pressing legal issues in the energy industry.
