Speaker Information
Speaker Registration Fees
Speakers’ registration fees for the Mine Safety program are complimentary. We will register all speakers, so you do not need to contact EMLF about registering.
Speaker Expenses
As a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt educational organization, the Foundation relies on the mineral bar and industry to underwrite part of the costs of its programs by absorbing the expenses of our speakers' participation from their law firms or companies. If this expense reimbursement policy affects your ability to participate in the Mine Safety & Health Law Special Institute, please call Sharon Daniels at 859.231.0287 to discuss expenses.
Continuing Legal Education Credits
Conference accreditation is pending from states with mandatory Continuing Legal Education requirements. The Mine Safety & Health Law program contains 665 minutes of education (11 hours in 60-minute states and 13.3 hours in 50-minute states). Registrants and speakers may be required to reimburse the EMLF for MCLE filing fees that are imposed which are in addition to the MCLE application fees, which the EMLF has already paid. (I.e., states such as Pennsylvania, which require attorneys to pay $1.50 per credit hour attended when filing the report.)
Every Mandatory CLE Board in the country requires written materials on each topic if that session is to be accredited for CLE. We have numerous panel presentations at the Mine Safety program, and we ask that the Moderator for each panel help determine whether the written materials will be a collaborative effort, or if each panelist will be producing his/her own separate outline.
Hotel Accommodations
You should make your own hotel arrangements in Washington, DC. We are not reserving a block of rooms. Go to the DC Chamber of Commerce where you can make online reservations based on location at the Visitors’ Center http://www.dcchamber.org or Washington.org, the official tourism site of Washington, DC http://washington.org.
Outline Deadline March 12, 2010
Your outline should be approximately 5-10 pages in length, using Times New Roman font in 12-point type, without any template format or logos showing firm names (see sample). Please put names of cases in italics instead of underlining them. You may send outlines via email to emlf02@aol.com, but be sure to send them in Microsoft Word. DO NOT send in PDF format. Your outline should be geared to your oral presentation, with appropriate sources and case citations. PowerPoint presentation can be substituted for an outline if it is substantive. Many people will provide both an outline and a PowerPoint.
Your outline will be posted on the EMLF website, so Mine Safety registrants can view in advance and download the outline in hard copy prior to the program. Some Continuing Legal Education boards require that written materials be available in hard copy format at the time of the program. By placing your outline on the EMLF website, all registrants can access and download the outlines and meet the CLE requirement of their particular state.
Outlines will be available on a CD at the EMLF registration desk. Because we must allow time for creating and duplicating a disk for all attendees, we MUST have your written information by March 12 in order to include it on the disk made available at the Mine Safety conference.
Audio-visual Aids March 12 Deadline
If you are using a PowerPoint presentation, please see "Tips for Preparing Effective Presentations." Do not use firm or company logos on your slides except for the title slide. Please email your presentation to emlf02@aol.com, so that it can be available on the CD and tested prior to the program. The USDOL staff is responsible for providing the A/V assistance, but you can send your PowerPoint to the EMLF and we will be certain it reaches the right person. If you need A/V aids for an effective presentation, please contact Carolyn May by calling 859.231.0271 or emailing emlf02@aol.com as soon as possible. The deadline for your PowerPoint presentation is also March 12, so it can be reproduced on the disk.
Biographical Information
Many of you have spoken previously at EMLF meetings, but we would still like your most current biographical information in narrative form. A sample narrative bio is provided. Please send us an email attachment to emlf02@aol.com.
Social Event
On Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m., March 23, there will be an EMLF sponsored reception for all speakers and registrants at the law offices of Crowell & Moring, 1001 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC. The reception is hosted by Crowell & Moring and other EMLF member law firms, and no financial support for this reception is provided by the USDOL.
